The Senior Release Train Engineer is responsible for the leadership of software development teams who together are assigned to the development of a suite of services. This position is responsible for leading the development and enhancement of software services and systems and will provide coaching and direction for development squads, composed of both in-house and external members. The Senior Release Train Engineer will also provide coaching and direction for the other RTEs, as well as supporting the Software Factory as a whole.

The Senior Release Train Engineer is expected to work very closely with their counterparts in Product Management (Product Owners or Managers), Project Management (PMO), Chapters management, and the Agile teams themselves. This position is a company leadership position and provides management direction for the Software Factory.

 

Main Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include Agile coaching of development squads and other RTEs, monitoring day-to-day development progress, as well as participating in the leadership team to identify and resolve risks and squad needs. Proposing, implementing, and measuring metrics and KPI’s, and communicating with Project Management, Product Management, and other internal and external stakeholders is also required. The incumbent benefits from industry experience or an ability to learn quickly, as the airline management solution space is wide and deeply interesting.

The company follows SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework) for Lean Enterprises, and the position will fulfill the position of Release Train Engineer as a major part of the duties. The position has full life-cycle ownership of products under their supervision, including inception, development, maintenance and ramp-down. As such, the position must ensure that products in production have appropriate L2 and L3 support development squads.

 

Responsibilities include: 

  • Acting as primary or support Release Train Engineer, as per the processes and ceremonies outlined in the SAFe methodology.
  • Driving advancements to our products on schedule, on budget and with a high degree of quality.
  • Allocating resources and activities amongst development squads.
  • Managing subcontractor relationships and developing strategy for how to manage sub-contract resources to meet product roadmap or customer needs, etc.
  • Proposing and implementing metrics development teams and release trains
  • Monitoring and supervising development progress through metrics and direct involvement.
  • Working with Agile teams to ensure understanding of, and adherence to, our Definitions of Done and Ready.
  • Monitoring and adapting processes to ensure high quality solutions are output on time.
  • Ensuring L3 support rotations for managed services, driving to reduce on-call needs through process and service improvements.
  • Using servant leadership to remove impediments and remove risks to increase Agile team connections and health.
  • Connecting with Enterprise and Solution Architecture teams to ensure direction and vision are being incorporated into solutions.
  • Fostering a positive, productive, supportive, collaborative and energetic team environment with a customer-centric focus on delivering solutions.
  • Supporting the development of annual budgets for development to support the business’ goals
  • May be involved in interviews; support hiring decisions.  

 

Qualified Experience/Skills/Training:  

Education:

  • Successful completion of University degree in Computer Science, or equivalent

Experience: 

  • Minimum 7-10 years experience working with leading teams and/or design of complex software systems in a dynamic IT working environment.
  • Strong understanding of the full SDLC (Software Development Lifecycle) management, and several years’ experience working with it on a regular basis.
  • Proven experience in maintaining project schedules, documentation, communications and meeting deadlines.
  • Functional experience with Airline Ops & Crew solutions is an asset.
  • Experience developing under external industry standards or certifications (ie. AS9100, ISO27001).
  • Proven experience deploying software engineering methods for ensuring the development of high-quality software in a timely way.
  • Experience in Project Management including Agile Software Development, and SAFe for Lean Enterprises, an asset.

Licensure/Certifications:

  • Agile/SAFe certifications a strong asset, especially SAFe RTE.

Knowledge, Skills, Demonstrated Capabilities & Competencies:

  • Able to effectively communicate, both verbally and written, highly technical aspects of architecture and integration to management, clients and staff at all levels
  • Strong team orientation - someone who can enable others, instill a unified and collaborative atmosphere amongst a diverse team of software developers.
  • Ability to manage through a period of growth or transition an asset.
  • Able to translate business requirements into technology solutions, and new technology solutions into business opportunities; capable of understanding complex technical issues and their impact on customers’ operations.
  • Able to translate strategic objectives into daily activities and guide and motivate others to deliver.
  • Supplier (including contract) and partners management.
  • Ability to delegate tasks and monitor progress.
  • Ability to develop high-quality and high-availability software to business specification while understanding process and requirements.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.

 

Technical Systems Proficiency:

  • Knowledge of Aviation topics, Aeronautics, or Flight and Operations Management an asset.
  • Demonstrated expertise in various technologies, including application development languages and packages, client/server and Web, security, Web servers, browsers, Cloud technology (especially AWS)  and various third-party utilities and tools for integrating applications with databases and legacy systems.
